I told you when I
posted about the "follow everyone" mentality in social media that I had been in discussion with
Bill Green over at Make the Logo Bigger on the subject. Well over the weekend
he posted a tremendous piece that takes the subject in entirely new directions.
We discussed this subject a bit on
this week's edition of The BeanCast if you want to check that out as well. And though this is not strictly a marketing podcast subject, it certainly impacts us. This drive to get more followers take many forms (as Bill points out) and is really a threat to everything social media can become.
I also want to take this opportunity to clarify that I am not trashing everyone who follows 30,000+ individuals. I've seen some people thrive in such situations. But I'm still saying that after a certain point you are not really in relationship with these followers, as much as you're acting as a
de facto well-known but approachable celebrity.
That aside, definitely give
Bill's post a read. It's a good stuff. And look for part II of this series of his coming soon.
